Welcome to "A SMASH" a blog about being a volunteer at the Midland Center for the Arts. I've been volunteering at the Center for more than 10 years, and I'd love to share my experiences with people who are interested in volunteering at the MCFTA, or other local theatres/arts venues in their own cities and towns. The Midland Center for the Arts is an amazing venue that Midland is lucky to have. Two theaters, one apx. 400 seats, the other apx. 1200 seats, with a "Hall of Ideas" which is an interactive anthropological museum of Midland and its history. Midland has had such exhibits as "Wonderful Things: Treasures from Tutankhamun's Tomb," "Sue: Bigger Than T-Rex," and "The Art of The Brick." National Touring exhibitions that stop in such places as Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, also stop in Midland, because of the amazing space we have. There are many rehearsal rooms and meeting rooms, offices and the like, as well as two fully equipped backstage theater shops, and lighting/sound booths for each theater.

I am an avid thespian, and have been in many productions, including Ragtime!, Molly and The Last Bookworm, and 42nd Street. These productions are all put on via the Center for the Arts, and we are so lucky to be able to be involved. I'm also involved in the backstage arts, most recently Assistant Stage Managing our production of Annie. I hang lights, operate light/sound boards, stage manage or just work stage crew. I sing in our Music Society Chorale, which performs an average of 5-7 times per season, which lasts approximately a year. My involvement has gained me many amazing opportunities, as well as making some amazing friends. Theater is an awesome way to do all of this, and I encourage you to get involved if you have a chance!
